It doesn’t take much imagination to see that we are a nation of stressed out folks. Maybe we’re a little whiny when you consider that as bad as it gets here is probably very comparable to as good as it gets in some other countries, but we’ve created this fast paced, high stress society and if you aren’t a participant in the stress you aren’t participating in the upside benefits. Not pretty, but at the top of the food chain, CEO’s, physicians, attorneys, professionals of all types are finding that not all life insurance companies share in the normalcy of their stress or anxiety.
I’ve shared story after story over the years about, especially physicians and attorneys, who needed the help of anxiety or depression medication to get through the toughest parts of their education. Even though their use was short and reasonable and prudent given the nature of the latter parts of their schooling with bar exams and medical residency training, insurance companies treat them as though they were whacked out and years after they needed the help, still are whacked out. There are a huge number of companies selling life insurance, albeit conservatively, who don’t want any part of the risk presented by a professional who has been treated for anxiety or depression no matter how long ago it was or for how short a period. There’s a smaller group of life insurance companies who feel like they are really sticking their neck out by offering a CEO a standard rate because he has been or is currently on medication to deal with the real live stress of their position. And then there is a small group, less than .5% of the companies licensed to sell life insurance, who see the prudence in taking anti anxiety medication, the same as it is prudent to control cholesterol or high blood pressure. Why not take a pill a day and function with stability and confidence? Why not take the anxiety out of your life?
There are life insurance underwriters that agree with the last part of that scenario and don’t penalize people for being proactive about keeping the world in perspective. The problem becomes one of the law of small numbers. If there are 2000 companies that can sell life insurance in the US and there are only 10 or so who really understand mild mood disorders and anxiety, whether you are a stay at home mom or dad, the CEO of a company that employs thousands, or your doctor or your lawyer, how do you find the needle in the haystack? How do you find the right life insurance agent that knows the right company to go to? You won’t find it in large on line agencies such as Selectquote. For them it’s all about moving business. There’s no time to shop before hand and there’s no time to do it over if they don’t get it right the first time and the chance that you will contact Selectquote and actually work with an expert in impaired risk life insurance underwriting is, well, probably about .5%.
If you have questions or feel like an agent or insurance company used your application for target practice instead of acquiring life insurance, call or email us. If you fall into the well controlled mild mood disorder or past mood disorder mold and got hit with a standard or worse rate for it, call or email us. We understand how the system can work for you. We can help.
