We get that life insurance companies aren’t really against Christians and we understand that’s not why they are so wary about underwriting missionaries. The underwriting truth with traditional life insurance companies is that Christians are persecuted all over the world and in some parts of the world that persecution can lead to an untimely death. They will decline to offer coverage. Many of the missionaries I have helped to find life insurance are going to dangerous places from the beginning, so danger from a life insurance standpoint is imminent. Others are serving the Lord in relatively safe places and one would think traditional life insurance companies would consider that an acceptable risk. But they don’t and they use the pretty factual basis for that stance, the fact that just because a missionary is serving in Switzerland for the next three years doesn’t mean the three after won’t be spent serving in some area where Christians are an endangered species.
There are a few non traditional insurance companies out there that see things a little differently, the most consistent of those being Lloyds of London. For hundreds of years they have successfully made a go of insuring risk that other companies didn’t want and life insurance for missionaries, no matter where they serve, is not a new venture for them. They still weigh risk and you can assume that a policy for a missionary in the middle East might differ in structure some from that of someone serving in Italy. Sometimes the difference is in premium cost and other times it is reflected in the number of years that a life insurance contract will be guaranteed for, but the one way that there is no discernible difference is that, either way, the policy is approved and issued and has the full backing of one the the largest and oldest insurance companies in the world.
At this very point in writing this post I received this email, “I am a missionary heading to Cameroon, Africa. I’m not looking to get life insurance yet, just doing research. I will be flying small bush planes around the country into remote bush strips, Trekking into remote regions, driving motorcycle, and cars to remote regions. I will be moving there permanently. I know that most insurance plans will not cover me. What do you suggest?” I suggest doing exactly what this missionary did. Call or email us directly. We can help.
